Reindeer fur is considered to be one of the best materials to be used as protection between the horse and the saddle.
The fur has outstanding features; it´s dense and each strand of hair is air-filled which creates an insulating and phenomenal pressure-relieving effect. Wonderfully soft against the horse, warming and protecting the horse's skin. Moisture repellent and prevents chafing, making reindeer hides particularly suitable for sensitive/thin-skinned horses, horses with difficult saddle positions and unmuscled horses.
Each reindeer hide is unique and may vary in color and may differ slightly in size.
At use the fur will loose some hair, this is fully normal and can not be avoided. Follow the Product care instructions to keep your reindeer fur in best condition.
Each reindeer hide is unique and may vary in shade and color from light beige/brown to grey-brown/white.
Please note that all reindeer hides in the world shed regardless of tanning and quality.
There are aesthetic small damages / tears, 'bullet holes' (bullet holes are actually small holes after insect bites) in the hides that do not affect the function of the skin.
Pre-cut size 70 x70 cm. This size is usually sufficient for most English saddles (dressage, Icelandic, all-round, jumping), treeless saddles, Iberian saddles, and others. If you have a larger saddle, such as a Western saddle, we recommend a size L reindeer hide instead. This hide measures 70 x 70 cm. This means that the reindeer skin does not cover the full length of the flaps, which in most cases is a positive feature as it allows for a closer feel to the horse. If you want the hide to cover the full length of the flaps, we recommend a size L reindeer fur.
Cleaning: Shake it off after riding. Occasionally vacuum the fur - use a regular vacuum cleaner but choose the lowest power and work gently from top to bottom. Do not wash.
Note: Avoid walking or standing on the leather to avoid the risk of hair breaking off.
This hide is a natural product from animals raised in Norway. Like all natural products, the hides are individual in size, color and shape. During the year you will see that some hair will come off. This is natural and will continue throughout the life of the hide. Please note that part of the tail may remain on this hide.
The hide is made for outdoor use. If it gets wet, dry it slowly at a low temperature indoors. Brush with a soft brush if necessary. Shake if you need to, removing any dust or other loose material.
The best place to store the hide when not in use is somewhere where you have a lower than normal indoor temperature e.g. in your stable, cellar or garage. This helps to keep the hide in good condition as it thrives better in a cooler environment.
The reindeer are slaughtered for meat under the supervision of The Norwegian Food Safety Authority - Mattilsynet.
All tanning is done with the approval of the Norwegian Environment Agency - Miljödirektoratet.
